Overview
Soprema's Copper Art and Silver Art are premium decorative waterproofing membranes that combine the aesthetic appeal of real metallic finishes with the superior performance of modern PVC technology. These high-performance, plasticized PVC membranes are reinforced with polyester or fiberglass and incorporate fine metallic powders — copper for Copper Art and aluminium for Silver Art — creating finishes that authentically mimic traditional metal roofing. Copper Art naturally oxidizes over time to develop a beautiful patina, just like real copper, while Silver Art provides a stable, highly reflective finish. They offer a lightweight, durable, and often more cost-effective alternative to sheet metal roofing — without the risk of theft for scrap value. Vanguard specifies Soprema Art membranes for prestige projects where aesthetic quality and long-term waterproofing performance are equally critical.

Common Questions About Soprema Copper Art & Silver Art
Honest answers to the questions our clients actually ask.
Does Copper Art look like real copper?
Yes — convincingly so. Copper Art contains genuine copper powder in the PVC compound, giving it an authentic copper appearance. Over time, it develops a natural patina just like real copper, transitioning from bright copper to a distinguished verdigris. Most people cannot tell the difference from ground level.
How does the cost compare to real copper or zinc roofing?
Soprema Art membranes typically cost 40–60% less than equivalent real copper or zinc installations, including labour. They're also significantly lighter, which can reduce structural requirements. For projects where the aesthetic is important but the budget doesn't stretch to solid metal, this is a compelling alternative.
Will it be targeted by metal thieves?
No. Unlike real copper or lead, Soprema Art membranes have no scrap value. Metal theft is a significant problem for heritage and commercial buildings — this product eliminates that risk entirely while maintaining the prestige appearance.
What's the expected lifespan?
Soprema Art membranes have an expected service life of 30+ years. As a high-quality reinforced PVC membrane, the waterproofing performance is independent of the decorative finish. The copper or silver appearance will naturally evolve over time, which is considered a feature rather than degradation.
Is this suitable for listed buildings and conservation areas?
Frequently, yes. Many conservation officers accept Soprema Art as an alternative to traditional materials because it delivers an authentic appearance without the security risks. However, planning approval always depends on the specific building and local authority. We can assist with specification documentation to support planning applications.
Beach Retreat, Ramsgate
Copper Art membrane meeting conservation area requirements on 7 luxury beachfront apartments in historic Ramsgate.

Wave-Form Conservation
The Challenge
Just 1 hour 20 minutes from London via high-speed rail, the historic maritime town of Ramsgate sits within a designated Conservation Area of special architectural and historic interest. The Beach Retreat — 7 luxury beachfront apartments on Marina Esplanade with uninterrupted sea views — required a roof solution that would respect stringent planning requirements while delivering a prestige finish worthy of the coastal setting.
The wave-form roof design, inspired by the coastal surroundings, demanded a material that could follow complex curved geometries whilst meeting conservation regulations requiring new developments to enhance and maintain the area's special character.
The Solution
Soprema's 1.8mm Copper Art PVC SFC membrane with standing seam profiles was specified. The membrane's real copper particles provide the aesthetic benefits of a traditional copper roof combined with the advantages of a modern waterproofing material — eliminating the risks of water ingress associated with traditional roofing methods and removing the threat of metal theft from the building.

“The membrane not only takes on the patina of age, just as real copper would, but also prevents the opportunist in relation to an increasing number of thefts from traditional metal roofs. Using a modern membrane in an innovative application such as this has provided the structure with a high-performance waterproofing system and met the conservation requirements for the local area.”
Steven Flegg, Meridian Membranes
“We are really pleased with the look and finish of the roof in particular as this was one of the most challenging elements of the work. The forming of the wave-style roof was a very complicated element in the overall construction and is one of its main features. It took a lot of attention to detail coupled with a careful installation to ensure that we achieved the desired effect.”
Chris Lynch, Kentish Projects
The Result
Conservation Approved
The Copper Art membrane satisfied all planning requirements for the designated Conservation Area, enhancing the historic character of Ramsgate seafront.
Complex Wave-Form Achieved
PVC flexibility enabled precise forming of the challenging wave-style roof design — something that would have been extremely difficult with traditional copper sheet.
Theft-Proof Prestige
Authentic copper appearance without the scrap value, eliminating the growing risk of metal theft while maintaining a premium coastal aesthetic.
Tollymore National Outdoor Centre
1,200m² of Copper Art membrane bringing prestige aesthetics to an award-winning eco-building in the Mourne Mountains.

Project
Tollymore National Outdoor Centre
Location
Co. Down, Northern Ireland
Completed
2012
Coverage
1,200m²
The Challenge
Set in the foothills of the Mournes, Tollymore National Outdoor Centre underwent an extensive redevelopment in 2010 to create an ultra-modern, eco-friendly facility for outdoor activities. The specification called for a roof covering that would deliver the prestige appearance of traditional copper standing seam — whilst being practical, cost-effective, and in keeping with the outstanding natural landscape.
The Solution
The impressive barrel-vault roof was covered with 1,200m² of Copper Art membrane with standing seam profiles, giving the convincing illusion of a traditional copper standing seam roof. The membrane was rolled top to bottom and fully adhered to the timber substrate, with operatives using rope access equipment to manage the curved geometry.
Because the membrane contains real copper particles, it takes on the patina of age and changes colour over time — just as copper cladding would — blending naturally into its mountain surroundings without disturbing the outstanding landscape.

“Copper Art waterproofing membrane was selected for its versatility and outstanding aesthetic appearance — providing clear financial, aesthetic, installation and performance benefits whilst meeting the sustainability requirements of the specification.”

Natural Integration
The membrane's real copper particles ensure it develops a genuine patina over time, blending perfectly into the Mourne Mountains landscape.
